River Play: Sticky Little Hydraulics

Writer's picture: Dale SwansonDale Swanson

Q: How do you hone whitewater SUP skills to paddle class 3 and harder?

A: Work the heck out of that class 2 river near your home.

  1. Catch every eddy.

  2. Surf every wave (even the teeny ones).

  3. Tap every rock.

Recently my good friend and video collaborator, Dale Briggs, gifted me his old, first generation GoPro so that I could capture more video for him to work with. We have this idea of producing a short series of instructional videos…

In the meantime here’s a fun little edit extracted from an experimental shoot on the convenient whitewater training ground of the Smith River downstream of the Martinsville, VA, Sports Complex access.

In a few weeks we’ll be able to shed the dry suits! Happy Springtime, y’all!
