Blade in the Water
If you’re still getting up into a standing position on your board the same way you were taught that first day … this is for you.
In swift water where currents are splitting and turning and merging maintaining control of your craft is a constant effort. Taking the paddle out of the water to put your hands on the deck to push yourself up to a standing position takes a few seconds during which you necessarily turn over control to the river.
To avoid this interruption in control it is worth learning to Brace Up and Brace Down as described in this short video.
